Why Fire Coaches?

Here we are the the end of yet another long (too, long) professional Football season. As is customary these days, the end of the season is very quickly followed by the firing of at least a few head coaches. Today, the Cleveland Browns, NY Jets AND the Denver Broncos all canned their head coaches for the poor performances of their respective teams.

I don't know about you, but I'm sick of seeing professional sports coaches getting the axe for the performance of their players. Why is the fault always with the Head Coach?

True, to a large extent, the team follows the guidance of the head coach. Also true, the head coach is supposed to put together a coaching staff that will add more leadership and light more emotional fires under the feet of their players. The weekly team and coaching preparation must be thorough, and the play calling has to be spot on.

However, what everything comes down to is the actual efforts of the players.

THEY must be in the proper year-round physical condition; THEY must learn the plays; THEY must accept responsibility for all they do; THEY must execute the plays as designed; THEY must fulfill their assignments in every way; THEY must take the blame for a poorly executed game plan.

After all, aren't the players under contract to play for pay? Where is it written in any contract that once they have money, a player can miss a pass route; miss a crucial block; not make the passes; etc?

Aren't these PROFESSIONAL athletes we're talking about? Where is the professionalism when an entire team underperforms so much that the coach gets fired? Where is their integrity?

I would love for a whole team to stand up and tell sports fans that they just didn't get their jobs done. Their coaches are not to blame for the lack of execution on the field. "Heck, the coaches prepared great...WE blew it out there today."

But it'll never happen. Why? Because a coach is far more expendable than players under contract--and the players know it! I've never heard of a team firing its players, and we never will. There is too much money invested in the players. Sure, we'll see one or two jettisoned along the way, but we'll NEVER see players being fired from their teams en masse. Won't happen...Ever.

So, we arrive still at the same place--blaming coaches for the lack of positive results on the field. Remember, over-paid and under-performing players aren't to blame, just the head coach. After all, coaches are out there playing the games, running the wrong routes, missing the tackles, allowing defenses to sack the quarterback, not opening lanes for running backs, etc. Right?

But, when a team loses, I guess you gotta blame somebody. Might as well be the coach...even one that brought you a couple of Super Bowl wins.

How He HOPES He'll Be Remembered

Last week our lame, lame-duck President showed off his latest lame move--the unveiling of the Presidential Portrait. Traditionally this portrait shows the outgoing President looking distinguished, having an air of grace and authority.

Our lame[duck] President, GeeDubya Bush pulled another fast one and thumbed his nose (yet again) at the tradition of the Oval Office. The artist painting the portrait was a former classmate of Dubyas, and our lame [duck] Prez asked him to portray our nations most hated leader in a more casual, relaxed pose.

So, here we have the end result--good ole Georgie sitting on the floor in a casual shirt (sans tie), in a good old folksy-type pose.

To me this is yet another pathetic move by a less than pathetic President. This portrait screams "forget about all the problems I've caused this country...two wars; an environmental firesale to big business; $10T (that's TRILLION) dollars of debt; a weakened Congress; a demoralized military; suspicious allies; near depression-level economy, etc.

No...to me the lame ducker is trying to tell everyone (enemies and supporters (however few there may still be) that he's just Georgie--the down-home, next door neighbor guy who happened to live in the White House.

Well Shucks and tarnation...I forgot he was just like me!

Do you see my point? All throughout his Presidency, his now infamous Spin Machine of an Administration always portrayed Dubya (and Cronies) as if there really WERE acting in the best interest of this Country--and not in their own self-serving, money hungry selfishness that truly spewed out of the West Wing.
Now here he goes again, trying to convince everyone that the Domestic nightmare that was his Presidency was really not his fault--cuz he's just a regular guy like you and me...

Sorry you Lame-duck. Your spin machine is well past broken, and all your attempts to tell us you're really one of the good guys just ain't gonna happen. You will always be remembered as the worst President in the history of this once great nation.

CHRISTMAS vs Holiday

...we interrupt your Christmas music for the following news...

Headline.....Political Correctness runs amok....Atheists tell the vast majority of religious citizens that god and all religion are a myth perpetrated to enslave minds...political leaders, fearing for future votes, cave in to the demands of this "oppressed" minority...News at 11.......

...Extra! Extra! Read all about it!....Christmas is off! The yearly "Winter Holiday" is officially celebrated on December 25th!...Atheists now feel they are included in a society they claim was NOT founded on Christian principles...There is NO Christmas because Christ does NOT exist...Extra! Extra! Read all about it!...

...Dateline, Olympia, Washington...Governor Christine Gregoire, fearing that the Constitutional rights of a very small handful of people (most of whom aren't even in her constituency) are being denied, today allowed a Wisconsin Atheist group to place a sign next to a Nativity scene [in the Washington State Capital building] that did nothing but spit in the collective faces of all religious folks.
Predictably, the religious response was both swift and on the mark as they stated that Christmas was not just a religious holiday, but one of love, sharing, and giving as well; and anyone who opposed even these precepts had no right imposing their will on everyone else...

...Editorial...Since when does the Christmas Holiday offend anyone...I mean...really!? This reporter suspects that these so-called non-believers have celebrated Christmas for decades, and felt as much a part of society as they do every other day of the year.
In my humble opinion, if they want to enforce their will on 99.999999% of the population, let them try. In the last 10 years there has been a growing backlash against the supposed trampling of civil rights on a few who want to change both the Letter and the Spirit of the Constitution.
I say, boo hoo you poor wretches. No one makes you include religion in the annual holiday. Just share presents, eat good food, and let your friends warm your hearts with smiles and gifts.
Would that really be such a terrible thing? I think not...

...and now, back to more of everyone's favorite CHRISTMAS music...

Gross Advertising Misconduct: The Follow-Up

In my original post called "Gross Advertising Misconduct" I told you about a commercial from Arby's restaurants that was blantantly sexual in nature. There was absolutely no mistaking the message they were putting across.

Well, I'm writing this because I actually received a response from Arby's. The complete text follows:

"Dear Arby’s Friend,

We’re sorry to hear of your dissatisfaction with our current advertising.

Many times we choose to use tongue-in-cheek humor and satire in our commercials in an effort to communicate information about the Arby’s menu in an engaging and entertaining manner.

Your opinion is very important to us, and we thank you for taking the time to provide feedback. The last thing we want to do is offend anyone. We have shared your comments with our marketing and advertising teams so they can be considered in the development of future advertising.

Very truly yours,

Arby’s Customer Relations"

Tongue in cheek humor? Satire? No way. My response to their letter:

"I'm sorry, but this commercial was NOT about humor or satire. It was about sex; plain and simple. If it was merely satirical, why insinuate a sexual encounter in exchange for your food, or simulate the man getting an erection? The explanation I received just doesn't cut it."

Needless to say, but I have not yet received a response to that. How can they? Their position is indefensible.
You see, advertisers generally stick to to a few basic premises to get their message across.
One is Sex.
Two is Humor.
Three is Relevancy [to everyday life].
Four is a combination of any of the first three.

All advertising seeks to manipulate the viewer in some way through visual, audio, or narrative enticement--or again, a combination of all three.

The Arby's ad in question was supposedly intended to be humorous or satirical, but was instead unmistakenly and overtly sexual. I've spoken with other people about this ad, and every one of them said they didn't see any humor; but instead were offended by the sexual nature of the ad.

Arby's is missing the boat. Their flat denial and suggestion of intent is just another manipulatory ploy to get a dissatisfied customer on their side and once again purchasing from their businesses.

My response clearly states the ridiculousness of their claim because I see it (the commercial AND the response) for what it truly is...an attempt to sell me on their product. A sales pitch. One for which I will NOT fall.

Gross Advertising Misconduct

I saw something on tv tonight that I was completely astounded at...and I don't mean that in any positive sense.

During tonights' 7 pm Family Hour a commercial for Arby's restaurants came on. It featured a man, sitting on a bed looking quite anxious. He asks an unseen person if she's ready. Flash to a view of a doorway and a voice calling out, "I'm only doing this because it's your birthday." Flash to the man who looks even more anxious.

Flash to the doorway through which a woman (presumably the man's wife) suddenly appears dressed in an Arby's uniform, holding a tray of food. She starts sauntering towards the bed [while sexually suggestive music plays in the background] in a highly sexually suggestive manner. Flash to the man who has a huge grin on his face. Above him is an Arby's logo with a definitely limp look to it. Suddenly the hat straightens right up in an unmistakable representation and overt reference to the man having an erection.

EXCUSE ME?!!!!! Are you kidding me?!!!!

I promptly went to my computer, looked up Arby's corporate, and wrote a very blunt and pointed letter informing them of how I feel about this commercial. Right afterwards, I got on my blog [here], and wrote this.

Now, don't get me wrong...I'm no prude, and I am definitely not sheltered. I am well aware of how advertisers go about selling the products of their clients. This particular ad however, surprised even me. This blatant, overt, and uninhibited use of sex to sell fast food was disgusting at best. And to have it during the Family Hour is simply irresponsible.

This commercial, aimed at our kids, should never have been approved. In my letter to Arby's, I stated that the advertisers should be fired, and the corporate manager who approved it should be, too. Further, I went on to suggest that the company fine itself, and donate the money to an appropriate charity. Lastly, I told them that I would never eat at any Arby's again for this gross misconduct. I meant every word.

If we, the viewing public do nothing about this type of advertising, the ad industry will assume that all is well, and will grow bolder with each successive ad campaign.

Please, if you see inappropriate advertising, write the company, the FCC, the TV stations, etc. Let your voices be heard so these people who so strongly influence our kids are not allowed to flood their innocent eyes with increasingly graphic sexual references. I for one, will not allow myself to stand by while this happens. I will speak out. You should too.

After all, if we don't do everything we can to care for the physical health and mental well-being of our kids, we are failing them.

The PC of "Going Green"

I've never been one to bend the way of the populist movement. Too much like a sheep following a herd. I prefer to actually use my brain, and to decide on my own whether or not I will do this or that, or if I will choose one thing over the other.

The latest movement in America that we are being told we should do is to "Go Green." Simply put, the politico's and private sector agenda pushers want everyone in the USA to blindly and obediently follow the philosophy that we should all be working hard to reduce our so-called 'Carbon Footprint' which we theoretically leave everywhere we go, and in everything we do. Supposedly, our efforts will, cumulatively, help reduce the harmful greenhouse gases we are told are besetting our planet.

Over the past decade we see story after story about how perilous our atmoshere is becoming--and hence, our safety. The news is regulary filled with stories relating the terrifying consequences to us all should our protective UV sheild [over the earth] fail. The polar ice caps are melting; the ozone layer is disintegrating; forests are dying; weather patterns are becoming unpredictable, etc. We are being fed fear en masse as to our fate should the global warming "predicament" go unchecked.

My point here, is that it seems to me that someone, or some group is pushing us all towards this frenzy of Going Green. Cities across this country are bowing to political pressure to reduce carbon emissions. Some counties are requiring new home building to incorporate reduce carbon off-gassing materials so as to further the cause of Green. Whole communities are being built (or rebuilt) to reflect this trend.

Hollywood actors are constantly pushing this agenda either privately, in interviews, or even as spokespersons for the effort. Media and advertisers immerse us with images and illustrations meant to convince everyone that the "Green Cause" is one we should all be actively concerned about, and working towards.

Study after study is released telling us what a trecherous position our home is in, and that we "must act right now to avert the impending environmental disaster." I have even seen an ad which stated that "you are un-American" if you don't do everything possible to reduce your 'Footprint.' (What the #@&%?!!)

Yet, there is another, viable side of this story; one that is quietly, and very quickly brushed under the proverbial rug; one that doesn't fit the push to "Go Green."

Over the past 5-6 years, there infrequently appear stories that relate a different view; a less doom & gloom outlook. A small (but growing) number of scientists are speaking up with serious doubts regarding the tenuous position of our planet. They are citing individual research (in other words, non-corporate interest, corporate subsidized research) which disputes the bandwagon of Greenies.

[Though I don't have the specific articles] The reasearch comes from several scientific disciplines. First, one scientist who studies oceanic currents has stated many times that the oceans are NOT heating up. The temperatures of the major ocean currents have not varied by more than (I believe) a half degree in the last 40 years. Since the ocean currents produce the weather patterns, this information tells us plainly that the supposed changes in the world-wide weather patterns are NOT happening. Instead, the weather is going through its normal patterns.

Secondly, a few years ago a leading researcher who studies the growth patterns of our forests published findings which state that the health of our trees has not changed in the last two hundred years. He reached this conclusion by studying the tree ring record. This is done by cutting down a tree, and examining the rings; looking for the number, color, and width of the rings, and so on.

What is seen tells a trained scientist about the health of a tree, years of drought, years of healthy rainfall, etc. It's a very complicated science. Anyway, this researcher stated publicly that the weather over the last 20 years is no more severe than in the previous 200. According to the tree ring record, there is no catostrophic weather event that has taken place. The ring evidence shows that the growth patterns are going through a normal cycle. Just like the weather, there are years of abundance, and years of lean [ecologically speaking, of course].

Lastly, I have read several different articles which collectively state that the earth itself puts out nearly as much pollution into our air as man does. How? Forest fires, red tide blooms, volcanic activity, etc. True, the influence man has on the environment is unmistakably obvious; but the overall condition is no solely the fault of industry and cars, etc. The earth has been polluting its air, and scrubbing it clean again for millions of years. Why does anyone think this has changed in the last 20 years?

My question or point to this entire article is who is behind this message of the dire straits the earth is in? Why is this whole green movement or agenda moving forward with such rapidity? Who benefits financially from the sudden fear and paranoia about the environment?

Over the course of history there has always been some mover behind the great changes that have ocurred--Democracy spread by the conquests of Alexander of Macedon; the consolidation of Catholocism by a relative handful of scholars culminating in the Nicean Creed; the exploration and colonization of the New World by greedy, self-serving nations whose two interests were domination and wealth; etc.

I suspect that such motivators are in play regarding the call to save our environment. Corporations are already lined up to provide the goods and services to help us all do our part; our monies doled out thoughtlessly to powers which have no real interest beyond the almighty dollar, but which profess to care about us and our world leading us to give again, and again, and again--all the while increasing the coffers of whatever corporations are the ultimate benefactors of our good will to help the environment.

About six months ago I read a report which stated that for every pound of carbon we save (offset), there are approximately 2-3 pounds of additionally used carbon. In other words, our very efforts to offset the carbon emmissions are doubling or even tripling the problem. Does that make sense to anyone? I guess my infinitely inferior brain just can't grasp the nuances of this environmental "disaster."

For me there are too many questions...too much doubt as to the validity of this whole movement to "Save the Environment." Yes, I care for the environment, and am extremely concerned about the waste we pump into the atmosphere. But when we are told to be a good sheep and follow the leader because it's "the right thing to do," then I must take a step back and examine the how's, why's, where's, and what's of the issue.

I may not be PC for doing so, but I would be remiss if I blindly, sheepishly, and unquestioningly followed the proponents of Going Green.

Governor Schwarznegger--What Gives?

You know, one thing the voting public in this country really hate is an elected leader not following the will of the people. This happened with Lynden Johnson (ramping up the Vietnam War), George W. Bush ("read my lips...No New Taxes!"), and George H.W. Bush (lingering wars, horrible economic policies, etc), to name a few.

In California, the recent passage of Proposition 8 which [the State of California] Constitutionally defines marriage as between a man and a woman has created many eye-opening events. Homophobia (against backers of Prop 8), bigotry, and defacement of religious properties were the starting point. National Media outcry for homosexual equality quickly followed. Celebrities from Hollywood to MoTown jumped aboard the Frenzy Express to denounce all those who actually voted their conscience and favorably voted for Prop 8.

Politicians were no exception. California AG Jerry Brown, who first made news by re-writing the language of the Proposition after it was submitted, has encouraged the gay community to fight the election results in Court. From what I've read, all the major politicians in the State are either speaking out against the establishment of the law, or are saying nothing, which basically says that they support those who are in an uproar.

By a very FAT 4% margin, the voters of California chose to pass Proposition 8. Now, given that the victory was so wide politically, you'd think that a Governor would stand up and defend the will of the people. After all, a Governor is elected by the People, and should (ideologically at least) have the best interest of the people in mind.

In Sacramento, this thinking does not hold sway. Governor Arnold Schwarznegger, in breaking from the will of the people, has himself called on the California Supreme Court to overturn the newly established law that was, again, passed by a majority of the voters of the State of California. This simple definition has speared the very heart of California, and its Governor is failing in his responsibility to lead the people.

Not once has he raised his voice above the din of protest and ask for calm and reason. He has not denounced the hate crimes being perpetrated by the losing side of the election. He has stood idly by as mobs assailed places of worship; as they accosted backers of Prop 8 with verbal, emotional, and physical attacks; as businesses, whose owners contributed to the passage of 8, became targets of hate and retribution; as members of the gay community angrily did everything they could to harass and intimidate anyone, or any organization that backed or voted for the establishment of a simple definition.

I have to wonder who is in the Governor's back pocket; who is pulling his strings; who is garnering political favor by manipulating a Governor of the United States of America into allowing the trampling of civil rights by those who so forcefully advocate love and tolerance, yet are themselves participating in these heinous actions against their fellow citizens.

Governor Schwarznegger, you should be ashamed of yourself for allowing a small minority of your states' population to dictate hatred against those who think and feel differently. Those who perpetrate these acts are criminals by definition. Yet you, for whatever inexplicable reason, are allowing the bigorty and acts of hate and violence to commence unabated.

This inaction, by an elected official is just shameful at the very least. Your calls for a Court of Law to overturn the Will of the People is reprehensible. You have not risen to the challenge in this matter, and should face an impeachment by the citizenry of your State. Your stance to wilfully ignore the civil unrest and trampling of civil rights constitutes a negligence I have not seen since the days of former Mississippi Governor George Wallace.

I for one hope that even the liberal Supreme Court of California will recognize what is happening, and enforce the Will of the People and strike down the legal maneauverings of a small minority group. Upholding the law that is Proposition 8 is indeed the Will of the People. Anything less, and we have yet another example of a very small minority literally forcing their will upon the vast majority. Haven't we seen enough of this already?

Misplaced Anger

Alright. Time to speak up.

On November Fourth of this year, the Voters of California passed (endorsed) a State Constitutional Amendment which strictly defined marriage as between one man and one woman. That's it. There was nothing about trampling civil rights, discriminatory endorsement, homophobic prevarications, etc. The amendment very simply states that a recognized marriage was between a man and a woman.

Instead of taking the defeat in stride and planning a new approach which might steer them towards acceptance, the gay community decided that they would stomp their feet and act like little children who didn't get their way. They started throwing a collective temper tantrum. They looked to blame everybody and everything for the defeat, and began inciting the very things which they themselves are fighting against--hate, violence, misinformation, disinformation, intolerance, bigotry, prejudice, etc.

While not everyone in the gay community participated in these events, nor did they endorse them, the fact is that calls for tolerance and peace were ignored by a majority of their community in favor of slander, bigoted rhetoric, verbal and written vilification against those who choose to feel differently, verbal and written harassment, physical harassment, defacement of places of worship, etc. Where is the "tolerance" the gay community so desperately advocates? Where is the love they espouse and have forced others to recognize? Where is the respect for the democratic process which they have been properly using to make the changes they seek?

Yes, the failure of proposition 8 was a stinging blow to those who seek equality. But to react to the defeat with the very hate they have been fighting against will do nothing but impair the gay communities' ability to finally achieve the acceptance they seek.

Additionally, two things rankle me about this whole thing. First, critics of the defeat rail on about how the Mormon Church took away their rights. What the #@&%!!!
This disinformation is pathetic at best. The Mormon Church did no such thing. The Church Leadership asked its members in California to donate time and money to defeating the measure. As far as I am aware, the Church itself donated NOTHING to that end.

However, a grass-roots effort by church members throughout the state of California heeded that call, donating many personal hours, and millions of California dollars to see that Proposition 8 was passed. Why? Because these registered California voters feel strongly in the millenia old tradition of marriage as between a man and a woman. Plain, and very simple. Beyond Church leadership saying, We'd like you to get involved in this issue, they played no role. Again, only registered voters in the State of California took an active role, as is their Federally Constitutionally mandated right to do so.

Members of the gay community completely misrepresent the facts regarding the involvement of the Mormon Church, choosing instead to spread the disinformation of lies, hate, claims of homophobia, etc, and turned the heart of Proposition 8 from one of a simple definition to one of an attack of civil rights against gays.

Wow. That just boggles my mind. But again, the worst part of this is the very hate they are fighting they are themselves using as a tool against anyone who voted against their wishes.

I've got news for you folks. This is nothing but hypocritical, and will only lead to more adversity in your fight. You used the democratic process and lost. So what? Do it again, and again, and again until you DO win.

Secondly, the national media is jumping on the bandwagon of this wave of hate and intolerance against the "terrible" heterosexual voters and the Mormon Church (and anyone else who supported passage of Proposition 8). Instead of using the proper journalistic morals and writing fair, balanced stories, the media (print, tv, radio, internet, etc) are acting like little sheep and following the shepherd (in this case, the gay community) along the trail like little obedient sheep.

They concentrate on telling the nation (and the world) what a terrible thing the passage of Proposition 8 is, and that some 18,000 "couples" are now denied their rights and freedoms, is irresponsible at best.

Where is the media outcry for those whose businesses and lives have been targets of hate because they chose to participate in the democratic process and voted with their conscience?

Where has the media spoken out against the defacement of sacred religious properties, which acts should clearly be labeled as religious intolerance and hate crimes?

I read report after report about how "wronged" the gays are. But not once have I read any opinion or perspective on why the majority of California voters stated that marriage is between a man and a woman. No one has asked them. Why? Why is THEIR opinion unimportant? Why is their viewpoint irrelevant?

Why is the media NOT vilifying those who are acting hatefully against the proponents of Proposition 8? Why are they defending those who would strip the Constitutional rights of the citizens of California that had the audacity to vote in favor of the definition?

This whole thing is beyond unconscionable. It shows me that this nation is on a VERY slippery slope which, if allowed to continue, will eventually lead to the stripping away of rights, and the establishment of religious intolerance and bigotry. How can we, as a people, allow this to happen? How can the media (as a whole) perpetuate this problem by condoning irresponsible journalism and allowing themselves to be manipulated by a small group, turning a simple wording into a national tragedy?

Personally, I think that the approval of gay marriage is an inevitability. In the mean time, why do those who fight for it spread the same hate and fear that they themselves have battled all their lives for? Why must they wrongly target individuals, business and religions that don't agree with with the choices of a small minority?

The United States of America was founded as a refuge; as a place where differing viewpoints could live side by side; as a place where people could speak their minds and vote their conscience without fear of intimidation or retribution.

It would seem that the gay community would, in their fight for acceptance and equality, turn their backs on the history which has given them the ability to speak out and defend that what they hold dear. They are even now inciting the very same intimidation and retribution which the Founding Fathers sought to eliminate with the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the Declaration of Independence.

Yes, we are on a VERY, VERY slippery slope, and are quickly approaching the edge of the proverbial cliff. What will happen now? Will we fall? Or will we survive?

Airlines Going Too Far

It looks like all the major air carriers are looking to completely screw their customers. Last Spring when I was traveling to Upstate NY, the airlines announced a $25 fee for checking a second bag; $50 for a third; and $75 for a fourth checked bag. (gulp!) Of course, their First Class passengers, Mileage ticket holders, and special "Sky" class passengers didn't have to pony up the fees. Nope, these ridiculous check-in fees are reserved for the greatest number of passengers (of course!), the Coach Class ticketholders.

Now comes news of an even better way to financially abuse their customers...Today, Delta announced that it is now charging $15 for the FIRST CHECKED BAG. Yep, now any passenger flying to see family, go on vacation, go on a business trip, etc and who actually has the temerity to want to take clothing along with them,...well, they are now penalized for not wanting to wear the same dirty underwear for days at a time.

I know that some of you are screaming about carry-on bags. On that note, most airlines are now extremely restrictive on what you can take on a plane. It is no coincidence that an air traveler who cannot take a large carry-on must check the bag, thereby paying the airline not only for the seat (and ONLY the seat--forget about any snacks nowadays), but also for actually having the guts to tell an air carrier they are taking a single piece of checked luggage! (Gasp!!!!)

Does anyone besides me think this whole thing stinks of a pungent, monopolistic odor? And I mean this REEKS!

The whole thing on these cutbacks (no more meals--except First Class of course, snacks, pillows--in some cases, etc) was 'justified' by rising fuel costs. Routes and numbers of flights were decreased across the board, planes became over-booked, and new fees suddenly began rearing their ugly heads.

Next thing you know we'll be charged for having the gall to use the restroom on a cross country flight; or for asking for a cup of water (I've heard a few airlines are already charging for ice water!), or for getting the bag you paid to have checked off the luggage pickup.

When airline ridership drops to historic lows, or revenues bankrupt most carriers, maybe then (and this is a pretty big maybe) someone will get the brilliant idea that passengers actually want to be treated like their purchase means something more to the company than a warm spot left on the seat when all the passengers have unstuffed themselves from the cramped hollow tube that has been passing for a pleasant flying experience.

...but I doubt it.

Election Day!

Tomorrow, November 4th is Election day! I hope that everybody reading this is registered, and knows exactly when they are getting out to cast their votes. Me, I'm going before work. I will proudly wear my "I Voted" sticker all day.
My kids are both having their first voting experiences. They are excited to actually be participating; and they absolutely SHOULD be! Every time I cast my vote, I leave the polling place feeling happy, grateful, excited, and thankful that I live in a country where my voice is heard through my vote. I never get tired of that feeling, and I hope I never do!

Please! Cast your vote tomorrow! Make your voice heard! No excuses...Just Do It!!!!!

A Lame Duck Presidents Lame Final Moves

It's common for a an outgoing US President in the final months of his term to enact regulations that don't get Congressional or Public review under the auspices of Executive review and interest. George W. Bush is no exception. However, his administration is taking this practice too far by working to enact reglations not for the benefit of the American people, but for the financial benefit of mining, power, timber, and other big businesses that could take decades to undo if once enacted.

Among the changes:
-Opening the approval process to allow for a ramping up of "Topping" mountains in the Appalachians for the purpose of faster, less expensive access to coal deposits. This practice, denounced by environmental groups and recreational groups, leaves permanent, visible damage to the mountains that cannot be undone. Last I heard, the mining companies had "Topped" over 1200 mountains. Enacting this regulation could quadruple the visible damage within a few short years. Additionally, the mining companies are lobbying hard to remove the restrictions on allowing mining pollution into streams, thereby polluting the water sources for many towns downstream from mining operations. This will add dangerously high levels of lead, mercury, cadmium, and other dangerous toxins contained in the slurry from mining.
-Removing nearly every restriction on coal fired power plants meant to protect the air, streams, lakes, and rivers we all enjoy--not to mention the billions of tons of particulate matter that would be dumped into the atmoshere on a yearly basis. Acid rain absolutely comes to mind when considering the ramifications if this is established.
-Abandoning restrictions on waste and emissions produced by oil refineries. This could very well lead to dangerously high pollution both into the air and into the ground/streams that would pose a very real risk to anyone near the refineries. Remember too, that our most-hated President gained his fortune in the oil industry, so I'm sure he has not only self-interest here, but also the interests of a number of his oil buddies around the country.

There are also the usual number of Presidential pardons (non are controversial--at least not that I've heard), Presidential favors to other Special Interest and Business groups, etc.

While every President uses the Holiday recess to enact various laws and/or regulations, they are usually enacted in the best interest of the American people--or at the very least, with the extensive commentary of public input. True to his deceitful form, Dubya (and Administration Cronies) is acting is his, and his Friends' best interest in mind. Forget about what is best for the Country as long as he and his friends are taken care of long after he leaves office.

After all, he's already assured his biggest Crony, Dick Cheney, guaranteed income for the foreseeable future with the no-bid contracts to Haliburton for both the wars currently being fought.

Talk about Lame.

Possibly THE Worst Drivers In This Country (Part 2)

I thought that I had rid myself of all the angst I feel on a daily basis regarding the drivers here in the [ugly] State of Utah; but alas, I am mistaken.

In addition to everything else I stated in my previous post, I thought I would give additional illustration about what a dangerous place Utah is [as it relates to driving]. To start, I have a friend in Oregon who read my previous post on this subject, and she completely agrees with me. Further, she adds that the drivers in her state (Oregon) are closing the gap on the horrific Utah drivers.

Alright...the illustrations...

-When you merge onto a freeway, the law generally provides that while existing traffic on the road is obligated to allow room for you to merge. At the same time, drivers entering the freeway are obligated to position themselves to provide for a safe merge, even if that means slowing down a bit.

In this state, drivers don't know what the word "merge" means. Why? Because they force their way into traffic--even at the risk of causing accidents. I quickly learned to get out of a lane when cars are "merging" onto the road. Utah drivers barely even look over their shoulders to observe traffic. Fewer use their signals. I've had merging traffic pass me on my RIGHT side (they were driving on the shoulder to do so!) to get in front of me when they entered the road way. Not only is this maneuver illegal, it's just plain dangerous!!!

-Speaking of signals, I think a lot of cars here must have broken levers on their signals. Drivers here either don't know, or don't care (more likely) that a signal ahead of any maneuver is to let other drivers know what you're going to do, and can take the proper steps to maintain safety for everyone. I estimate a good 90% of Utah drivers NEVER signal.

-When I moved here I made regular use of turn lanes. Whenever I drive out of state I still do. But while in Utah I don't use it unless I must. Why? Because drivers here freak out if you actually merge into a turn lane. You get honked at, called foul names, get flipped off, etc. Further, I've even seen cars here use the turn lane as a passing lane! Yeah...scary!!

-An all too common occurance on Utah roads is tail-gating. This incredibly dangerous practice happens so frequently that you almost expect it to be going on. I am a defensive driver. I was taught that being so is the safest way to operate a vehicle. I follow the two second rule almost subconciously. Around here though, defensive drivers seem to be few and far between. Instead, offensive driving rules the roads.

I mentioned in my previous post that most drivers here think that speed limits don't really mean much. Right in line with that thinking is tail-gating. Drivers going faster than you will get so close (while in motion!) that you can't see their car hood in your rear view mirror. Yeah, you read that right! The two second rule is non-existant; but is replaced by a 1/100th of a second standard. That is scary no matter how long you've lived here.

If you have to suddenly slow or stop, the pursuing vehicle's front end will be in your passenger compartment before they even realize they have to slow or stop themselves. Extreme tail-gating is one of the reasons there are so many at-fault accidents in Utah.

-Along these lines (or in addition to) is the all too frequent practice of using your high beams when driving...and I mean all the time! Generally, high beam use is permitted as long as you are at a distance greater than 450-500 feet behind a vehicle you are following, and 350-400 feet of a vehicle approaching you in the opposite direction. To be any closer will cause the drivers in either case to be blinded by your headlights.

In this state, drivers use their high beams constantly. Rural driving, city driving, darkened roads or lighted, you will encounter this rude and dangerous practice at any time when headlights are required. And when a driver tail-gating you has their brights on (again to intimidate you into speeding, pulling over, etc), this highly dangerous practice is magnified many-fold.

-I don't think the term "Right of Way" has been taught to the drivers here. They seem to have no concept of what this is. Why? Because every day I see people pulling out in front of oncoming traffic with seeming impugnity. As long as the 'gun it' and speed up fast enough, everything will be ok. Besides, they can drive however they want...right?

-Here's a doozie--Where is it even possibly fathomable (let along legal) for a driver to make a right hand turn out of the middle or even left lane? Well, here in Utah it must be ok, because this incredibly stupid maneuver takesw place every day....and most of the time it happens, the offending driver doesn't use their signal, so all the other drivers around are caught completely unaware when this ILLEGAL move happens. When you honk, they look at you as if to say, "What? What did I do?" Again, at-fault accidents are all too common here.

-Finally, all of these things I've talked about in this post (and the previous one) are all compounded in severity when the weather is rainy. Now, anybody (outside of Utah) knows that when rain is falling, stopping distances double (or triple, depending on conditions), road spray affects driver vision, and vehicle hydroplaning is a very real possibility.

Here, headlights are infrequently turned on in the rain ("I can see just fine. Why do I need to turn on my lights?"), following distances are terrifyingly close, and drivers rely on their brakes far too much.

I hate driving in the rain here, because everything that goes on, all the unbelievably dangerous things, are amplified thousands of times. While I know my driving will be appropriate, I have less than zero confidence that the other drivers have my safety in mind, let alone their own.

So, I hope that I have furthered my case that the drivers here in Utah are the worst in this country. It really is a dangerous thing...driving every day on the roads of this state. So, if you ever find yourself here, please, be extra cautious, and expect the worst to happen. Otherwise, you could wind up having terrible accident that was caused by one of the wonderful, indiginous drivers who were road safety educated by a state (and legislature) that just doesn't care enough to assure the road safety of its citizens.

Two Weeks Until Election Day

All right folks, this coming Tuesday marks the two-week point until the elections. If you aren't registered by tomorrow, you can't vote this time around. If you are indeed registered, time to make decisions regarding all the various races and propositions you will be asked to choose from.

All of you by now should have received a local voters pamphlet. I ask that you put in the time to read it, and start forming your opinions. I can tell you that I have been reading up on my National and Local choices, and am pretty much set on my voting decisions.

I implore each of you to please be knowledgable on your votes prior to going to the polls. If you don't think you'll remember, then write down how you're planning on voting, and take it with you to the polling station. Then, when Election day arrives (on Tuesday, November 4th), make no excuses and get to the polls. The earlier the better. Polls are typically open from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. That gives you lots of time before or after work, school, etc.

PLEASE remember that every vote does indeed count. So PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE get out and vote!

The National Debt

Today a headline appeared bemoaning the fact that the National Debt Clock had run out of spaces for more digits. This alarmed me because of how completely confounding this whole situation is. We (the USA) are operating on a debt the likes of which we have never before seen. The current $10,000,000,000,000 (that's ten trillion dollars) deficit is so big that, barring any further deficit spending, it will take us 35-50 years to pay off--if we ever get it paid off.

What really amazes me though, is just why the American people are not demanding answers as to the why's of this thing. How did the debt get so bad?; who authorized all that spending?; when did Congress ask for input from the American people on the current spending?; Why is our President standing by and allowing this to happen instead of demanding a stop to the madness?, etc, etc.

A little info here...

Every one of the Fifty States are required by the Federal Government (and their own State Constitutions) to carry a Balanced Budget. At the end of every year, they must be balanced, or in the black. Yet, the Federal government is under no such rule. They typically carry an ever increasing deficit.

During the Clinton Administration, the White House and Congress hammered out a cohesive, cooperative plan to balance the Federal deficit by the year 2010. Social Security was saved, the military was strong, social programs were intact, and by the end of Clinton's Presidency, the US was not only operation on a yearly budget surplus, we were actually able to decrease the deficit blance by some $450 Billion. We were well on our way to fiscal freedom (and should by now, be a little over a year from it).

At the time, our national Debt had decreased to around $2.5 trillion (down from $3 trillion) over the previous 4 years), and we could all see the light at the end of the proverbial tunnel.

Then, in steps George W. Bush and Cronies. One of the first things they did was plunder Social Security to pay for pet projects. Deficit spending ramped up once again, and all the work that a two-term President and Bi-Partisan Congress had done to ensure the financial well-being of this country was suddenly, inexplicably tossed out. Why? Congress seemed to roll over and not care that all they work that had been done was for nothing. They demanded no answers. They demanded zero accountability.

So, two ongoing wars later, plus an ongoing energy crisis, plus the rape of our lands for profit benefitting energy companies, plus unprecedented deficit spending, and we are in a hole that our great-grandchildren will be paying off (or at least, trying to...).

What a wonderful legacy this lame-duck President is leaving for the American people. I bet he doesn't lose a bit of sleep knowing that while his pals in Energey, Special Interest Lobbies, and Mining companies are making tens of millions, the average American family is having to choose between feeding themselves, paying bills, and having a place to live.

I sure am glad he can sleep knowing what he and his Administration have done over the past 8 years. Good for him...

Suing Over A National Day of Prayer

I read today that a large group of athiests in Wisconsin is suing the President, the Governor of Wisconsin, and several others over the country's 'National Day of Prayer.'

These citizens think that they are actually being forced to participate, and that they are excluded politically and societally because of their beliefs. So this group of whatever number they are, are seeking to tell every person in this country what to do and think. What the #@&%!!!

Instead of wasting taxpayer dollars in pursuit of the non-existant "Separation of Church and State" clause, why don't these good folks just decide they won't participate? It is certainly their right to, or not to, take part in the National Day of Prayer. Why sue over what really comes down to as a matter of personal choice?

Hmmm...Let's see...the thinking is probably going something like this..."I'm athiest. I don't believe in God, or prayer. Now, here's the government telling me I have to pray on a specific day.How dare they do that! I'm not going to be forced to pray to a god I don't believe in! I think I'll sue and tell everyone in the country who DOES believe in God that they can't pray to whomever they believe in."

...and the rhetoric would continue. My point again is freedom. Freedom to choose to participate, or to NOT participate. Why do people feel it is essential to enforce their atheism on a majority of Americans who do indeed believe in a Divine being? Remember, this country was founded on Christian principals, by religious, God-fearing men who sought Divine inspiration every morning [through prayer] before continuing their work of framing the government.

The current Government of the United States does NOT endorse any specific religion, it does NOT force anyone to attend church services, it does NOT demand that its citizens pray to any specific Diety. The illusionary separation of Church and State is still intact; the country goes on.

These mamby-pamby atheists have zero business telling me that I can't pray. It is a personal choice to believe, or not believe, in any diety in whatever form.

In the bogus fight over (once again) the non-existant Separation of Church and State, the vast majority of Americans are being told (through Court decisions) they can't pray in public places; they can't worship in public places or on Government owned land; they can't see a display of the Ten Commandments (a set of guidelines which really only help all of us to be better people) pretty much anywhere outside of church buildings; and that the Founding Fathers really never brought religion into the development of this country through legal action, historical distortion, historical omission, rewriting fact to fit their agendas, etc.

Listen folks, this really is about the freedom to choose. Freedom to pray, or to NOT pray. Freedom to choose to participate in a particular event...or NOT. But instead of choosing to NOT participate, these folks are looking to enforce their personal beliefs on everyone else so they don't have "to feel uncomfortable in politics or society."

Are You Registered?

Are you registered to vote in the upcoming Presidential and General Election?

The Consitution of the United States guarantees each citizen's right to participate in the political process. Some choose to run for office, while the majority of citizens 'merely vote.' I say 'merely' in a facecious tone because the right to vote is an incredible thing.

The framers our our government (the Founding Fathers) proposed a thing so completely unique that many observers doubted it would actually work...the power of the citizenery to choose who would lead them.

Over the course of the United States' history, the outcome of our elections has been good, not so good, and sometimes downright bad. Not all elected leaders at any level are exactly who they profess or try to be. The weighty responsibility an elected official has must be tremendous. I've personally known some good men and women who have served in varying levels of government, and not one of them didn't feel a terrible burden every day in office. Not all of them kept their priorities intact either. But at least they were out there trying to make things betters, and to do the best they could.

When we as a voting constituency decide that registering is too bothersome, or that getting to the polls is too much of a hassle, then we are letting ourselves, and our community down. Can you choose not to vote? Absolutely! That's your right.

But if you choose to sit on the sidelines on any election, then I personally feel that you have absolutely ZERO right to complain about the current state of politics on any level. If you want change, then you must participate--even if you are simply casting your vote; because if you don't care enough on election day, then you certainly don't care enough about any issue that affects you on a community, city, county, state, or national (and even international) basis.

Educate yourselves on the offices, candidates, and issues in your area. And PLEASE, get registered. You only have until 30 days prior to the election. Then, on November 4th, make it THE priority to get to your local polling station and utilize that awesome right (and responsibility) and cast your votes for offices at all levels.

Common Courtesy Out The Door

What has happened to us? I'm not talking any event; I mean, what has changed in society that makes it ok for people to treat others with disrespect, contempt, abusive language, and complete anger? What used to be unacceptable twenty years ago is now all too common. Why?

Today at my work, a customer called to [incorrectly] complain about a product he had received. When he was told that he was actually in error, he began vilifying three of my management staff, calling them F***n this, and F***n that; yelling; calling them liars; abusively berating them for something that was actually due to a customer error, and nothing we had done.

I was called in to deal with this customer. I gathered all the info I needed, and then took his call. This gentleman lit right into me, and furthered his previous (and now ongoing) beratement of my managers.

I quickly and firmly interrupted him and stated that "Do not talk about my employees like that. It is disrespectful, and I won't tolerate it." At this point, he began directing his anger at me, and started calling me a liar, and insisted I pass him up the line of command, which I refused to do. He then hung up on me; so I left. He then started harassing my managers by calling repeatedly and demanding to speak with me. When he was told I was no longer in the office, this man's tirade started anew.

At this point, I told my managers to make a police complaint. We had the man's phone number, business address, and name. Needless to say, but the next time he called, one of my managers told him that we were calling the police and filing a complaint. He stopped calling; but the complaint was filed anyway.

My question again, Why is it ok to treat others with such contempt and disrespect? It's bad enough when this happens in your personal life, but is compounded when it involves business customers. And this guy was 100% in error in his complaint. Yet, it was our fault. What gives?

We are all born with an innate sense of right and wrong. We know it; we feel it when making both good and bad decisions. Somewhere along the way, some people begin to ignore that sense of right vs. wrong, and go stomping about intent on seeing that everyone hears about how they were wronged, and someone's gotta pay!

It seems to me that this attitude is beginning to filter ever increasingly out into mainstream America. People who used to accept little mistakes (perceived or real) and say, 'That's ok. What can we do to fix it?' are beginning to take offense at comments, body language, even vocal intonations--many of which are completely innocent. Why? What has changed?

As I go about my everyday life, I increasingly notice a pervading sense of selfishness all around me. I try, and I mean really try, not to let myself get caught up in it. It would certainly be easy enough to slip into. This selfishness takes many forms like impatience while driving; ignoring servers in restaurants; demanding satisfaction if something doesn't go your way; berating business employees (even when you are completely in the wrong); extreme and avoidable neighbor issues; treating department store employees like chattle; etc, etc, etc.

If I'm wrong, tell me...but I know that I'm not. This observation is spot on. Its going on every day, and is getting worse with each passing year.

So you might be asking yourself, "What can I do about this?" Well, start with yourself. See if this behavior is infiltrating your everyday life. Then, stop doing whatever, and start living by example. We cannot change everyone we see because we want to. We can only change ourselves, and live by example, hoping that we can influence a few people along the way. If enough people subscribe to this belief and practice it, then things will change...slowly thought it may be.

But if we do nothing and expect change to happen, then we are merely deluding ourselves and will only witness the societal changes worsening year after year. I for one want society to adopt a more tolerant stance in everything we do. Will it happen? Will this change be achievable? I doubt it; but in the mean time, I will try, every single day, to be the best person I can, and to always be aware of how I treat others.

No, I'm not perfect, nor will I ever claim to be. But how I treat others in voice and action is important in my everyday life. I expect to be treated with respect, and I will do my best to treat others the same way. If I don't, then I have failed to follow that innate sense of right and wrong that we are all born with, and am no better than this gentleman that I was forced to deal with today.

Shutting a Freeway for A Fallen Officer

A little over a week ago a terrible thing happened in North Central Washington when a man gunned down 6 innocent people, one of which was a police officer. It was a horrendous unfolding of events that sent shock waves through communities in and around Mount Vernon, WA.

A few days ago, as an honor for the fallen officer, the Washington State Patrol (one of THE finest State Law Forces in the nation) temporarily shut down a portion of Interstate 5 so the funeral procession could travel safely, and as an act of honoring the slain officer.

On Sunday, a "wonderful citizen" of the area wrote a letter of complaint to the Seattle Post Intelligencer stating how ridiculous it was that the freeway was shut down (briefly), and how inconvenienced he was. He was so incensed by the action of the State Patrol that he is considering filing a complaint regarding the whole matter.

What the #@&%?!!

Is this man really serious? Does he have one ounce of compassion for not only this officer, but for her family, or even for the civilians killed as well? So he was late getting to where he needed to be; big deal. So he was upset because of the traffic back-up; what a shame.

This man needs to put his priorities in line. When we feel we are inconvenienced because we have to wait for a funeral procession that also honors someone who has died defending us, then something is seriously wrong with us.

Human compassion is inherent in all of us. Whether we personally know someone who has died or not, we all pause to think about them even if only for a few seconds. Tell me I'm wrong.

I think that this individual needs to put aside his irritation at being inconvenienced. He needs to just stop and think, only for a few seconds. And in doing so, I would hope that he finds it in his heart to realize that his annoyance was unjustified, and just plain wrong.

It is a very sad statement on us all when basic human compassion and kindness is over-ridden by impatience, annoyance, and wrongly placed anger. Sad indeed.

Who Should We Believe In?

Who should we, as a voting constituency, believe in while assessing the best possible candidates for President and Vice President of the United States? Only two choices remain: John McCain, and Barak Obama.

On the former, Senator McCain has been in public service for most of his adult life. He has served the State of Arizona well over the years. He is an honorable, and decorated veteran of our Armed Forces. He has helped write and push legislation through Congress. He has vast experience in the Federal Government. He would seem to be a good choice.

On the other hand, the Electorate of this great Country is tired of the Repulican way of doing things. In eight years of Republican leadership we are in debt that our great grand-children will be paying off; we have begun raping our environment in an effort to be "energy independent;" we are in a war that was proven to be completely groundless as the current Administration distorted and created truths in their successful attempts to enter into the Iraq war; our Consumer Spending Index is the worst its been in 22 years; our educational system is a joke as discticts around the country scuttle arts and other electives in order to meet the No Child Left Behind joke of a law that doesn't even work (just so they(the districts) don't lose federal funding); homelessness is at its highest level since the Great Depression; and the average American Taxpayer is having a difficult time paying bills and feeding their families because of unconcionably high energy, transportation, and labor costs.

Since GW took office nearly eight years ago, we have not imroved as a nation, we have slipped backwards while a few
politicians and corporate bigwigs are living high off the hog as they pillage America's resources, jobs, and family budgets.

So, with Mr. McCain, we are being asked to continue to support the Republican Agenda that got us where we are today. Hmmmmmm....

Now, on the Democratic side we have Senator Barak Obama. He is a one-term Senator from Illinois who has limited leadership experience, has failed to do any real lawmaking in the Senate, but who is a very convincing and persuasive orator who has won the hearts of most (but certainly not all) Democrats in the land. He is untested, but has some great ideas. I think I'd term him an "idealist" with plans to 'clean up Washington (D.C.).'

After listening to the young Senator from Illinois, I can't get a clear picture of any specifics he wants to address. He seems to be merely whipping up Americans into a frenzy about fixing things, but does so with what appears to be an empty bag of plans. Hmmmm...

On the Vice Presidential side, Joseph Biden (for the Democrats) has years of Senate experience; is a proven lawmaker with America's best interest at heart, and has the foreign diplomacy experience that Mr. Obama lacks.
As far as I am aware, Mr. Biden has no major flaws, and seems to be a man of character. He has a good track record of Public Service, but has himself run at the Presidency, which may cause contention in the White House.
On the oppositions side, Governor Sarah Palin looks comfortable in the role for which she was nominated. She is a convincing orator, but has herself fairly limited Executive type experience. She comes from a major oil state (which plays right into the Rebulican agenda), but seems to be an every-day mom and wife doing the best she can each day.
What all this comes down to folks, is choice. Who will we choose to lead this Country. There are positives and negatives with each candidate (and running mates). The choice is not easy.
But I urge you to study the respective agendas of both candidates. I urge you to ask questions. I urge you to register to exercise your right and priveledge to vote. Then, on election day, make no excuses; get out and vote; because then, and only then, can you complain if things aren't going well.

The RNC

Well, I watched tonights Republican National Convention speech by Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, and I must say that I am extremely impressed. Whomever wrote the speech did an exceptional job. But it was Gov. Palin's delivery that impressed me most.

She was calm, relaxed (at least on the outside), and her command of the lecturn really started me thinking about the upcoming Presidential election in a more earnest way.

With every election, we have to think about not only who the next President could be, but also who will take over as President in the (unlikely) event that something happens, and the Vice President must assume the office.

Tonight, I saw just how wise a choice it was of Senator McCain to align himself with Mrs. Palin. She is well-spoken; deliberate in her words; and really has an air of quiet confidence about her that tells me that in a crisis, she would be an outstanding leader.

We all still have much to think about as the election draws near. The Governor's speech tonight was definitely the highlight of the long campaign, thus far.

I encourage all of you to be sure you register to vote, and subsequently, exercise your freedom of choice by casting your ballot. Until then, educate yourselves about the people, the issues, and the future of this country.

What a Pal...

Have you heard the news about the Bush Administration’s plans for how much longer they wanted out soldiers in Iraq? What was supposed to be a 5-year mission has turned into a 6 year conflict, with three more still to go; and possibly more beyond that if the Iraqi Government triggers the option for our armed forces to remain even longer.

First, I read this morning that Bush and Cheney (and Cronies) tried to negotiate our continued military presence there until 2015! Excuse me?!!!! Whatever happened to “Five Years?” Further, who will benefit from our continued presence? Obviously the first thing that comes to mind is Iraq. There still is much to be done.

Secondly, what comes to my mind is Haliburton, the main company providing services and supplies to our forces. When the US first proposed the rebuilding of Iraq {following the “end of the war”) President Bush assured the country that they would perform an open bid on contracting for the goods and services required to rebuild infrastructure, and continue the supplying of what troops remained in Iraq.

Then, before we know it, the Administration (?) gave a no-bid contract to Haliburton, the company our overbearing Vice President ran before he became VP, and in which he holds huge stock options. What the #@&%?!!!! What happened to the “Open Bid process” that we were promised? Why weren’t other companies allowed to get their proverbial foot in the door?

To me, the answer is very simple. This current Presidential Administration was looking out for its own. Dick Cheney, already a millionaire many times over, saw the opportunity to make hundreds of millions more by putting his company in charge of the contracts. President Bush granted the wish of his biggest Crony, and assured his friend Mr. Cheney guaranteed income for years to come. What a pal.

The losers here? Well, I see two…First, the Iraqi people. Haliburton has been raking in billions over the last 6 years, and little has been accomplished in the rebuilding of Iraq. Second, the American taxpayer is footing the bill to pay Haliburton (and vicariously, lining Cheney’s pockets) for their services which to me have already been inadequate.

Where is the accountability this contractor should be having to the American people? Why are they not answerable for the seeming wastage of OUR money? Why is Congress allowing Haliburton to continue their exclusive contracts?

It seems that there is a BIG fox in the henhouse, and it is being allowed to feast on everything inside…for as long as it wants. I sure am glad that our President is watching over the American people as closely as he watches over the bank accounts of his closest friends. It’s comforting to know that my tax dollars are expanding the interests of Mr. Cheney and Cronies.

Thanks Dubya! What a pal…

Mitt Romney as VP?

I'm tired of hearing all of the continuously rehashed rhetoric about Mitt Romney as a possible Vice President. This started when he was a frontrunner in the primaries, and continues every time his name surfaces as a possible VP selection.

Every article I read generally agrees that his qualifications in the business, political, and service world are outstanding. Sure, a few disagree with his stand on certain issues, and that he has changed his mind on a few things--this after he learned more, and made an educated, informed decision regarding his positions.

But the thing that gets me most on Governor Romney is that people, as much as they feel he is best-qualified, constantly refer to his "Mormonism" as the main factor they wouldn't vote for whom they say is the best for the job.

WHAT THE #@&%?! They won't vote for Mitt Romney because of his religious affiliation?! Our Constitution strictly forbids any religious test as a determinent in a race for the Presidency. Let me say that again...

The Constitution of the United States of America FORBIDS ANY RELIGIOUS TEST as a determinent in a race for the Presidency.

It seems very evident that this prohibition has been completely ignored in Mr. Romney's case. Why is that? What makes people so afraid of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints that they would ignore the law of the land in order to get him (Romney) out of the race?

If people started attacking Barack Obama's faith, the media would be whipping up a storm of vilification for anyone even mentioning his religion in a negative way. So why the double standard when it comes to Gov. Romney? Why is it not OK to attack Obama's religion, but open hunting season has been declared on Romney's faith? This doesn't make sense.

I actually read an interview with a leader of the Southern Evangelical Association who stated that (and I'm paraphrasing here) "Mr. Romney is perhaps the most qualified candidate in the race; but I just can't get past his Mormonism." Another gentleman being interviewed stated that "Mr. Romney is too good to be true. He's too wholesome (WHAT?!!!). He's got to be hiding something. Besides, he's a Mormon. I'd never vote for him." Lastly, a young man of about 25 I personally know told me "If a Mormon becomes President, I'm moving to Canada." I asked him if Mr. Romney's qualifications mattered to him. His reply, "Not if he's Mormon."

Wow...ignorance, bias, and hate at their ugliest.

When we, as a nation (citizens, media, etc) seek to exclude the man most everyone generally agrees as being the best choice to run this country (now as a possible VP candidate) because of his religious affiliation, we are dangerously attempting to rewrite the very letter and spirit of the law which prohibits such a practice.

The media [in general] should be ashamed that they are perpetuating the anti-Mormon bias because they either personally disagree with the Governor's beliefs, or they choose to continuously dwell in ignorance; reading and rehashing yet another "journalists" article that dwells simply on how bad a leader he would be because Romney is a "Mormon," rather than doing their own research in an effort to educate themselves so they can write fair, balanced stories that will actually leave it to the minds of the readers as to whether he is qualified.

Talk about leading a horse to water...

Taxes, Taxes, and Even More Taxes

Did you ever wonder how many taxes you pay out in a typical day? I'm not talking about the huge taxes on things such as your home, property, paycheck, etc. I'm referring to the myriad of taxes we thoughtlessly pay out on a daily basis.

On your way to work you have to stop and put gas in your car. While filling your tank, you are paying an average of 35-45 cents in taxes on each gallon of gas you pump. That means for 10 gallons of gas, you are paying $3.50-4.50 in taxes. The Federal, State and City goverments all get a cut.

For lunch you decide to eat out. Enjoy the food; because along with your meal, you are paying a State and a City tax.

On your way home you decide to pick up a few things. Depending on where you live, you might be paying taxes on groceries. Non-food items are definitely taxed by both the state and city in which you live.

After dinner you decide to go see the latest blockbuster movie. When paying for your admission, you don't just pay a state tax, you are also paying a city "entertainment" tax (I love that one---taxing you for having fun!). Getting snacks at the theater? Again, food, plus State and City taxes attached.

On your way home, you have that snack attack come upon you, and only an ice cream cone will take it away. On top of whatever you pay for the icy treat, State and City taxes once again are a part of your bill.

Do you see where this is going? Aside from walking down the street, just about everything we do has some sort of tax attached to it. Don't believe me? Think about what you do on a typical day, and determine whether or not you are paying taxes all day long.

Have a pet? The county you're in probable requires a pet license (tax!). Want to go to your favorite state park? It most likely has a "Day Use Fee" (tax!) in order to enjoy the benefits of the park.

How about a trip to your favorite amusement park? You'll pay taxes on the cost of admission, taxes on any food you buy, and on any souvenirs you purchase.Oh yeah, you probably pay a parking fee (tax!) too!

When you buy a car you pay taxes on the car, and a tax for registering it with the State. Then, every year that you own that (or any other) car, you get to pay a licensing fee (tax!) to be able to continue driving around in a vehicle that you already paid taxes on. In the buisiness world, this is called double dipping--a practice in which you provide a product or service only to get a better version a year or so later and charge the same customers a larger sum (for the new product) than they paid a year ago. In the case of our car licensing fees (taxes!), this happens every year; literally for the rest of your life.

To me, the most mind-boggling tax of all is what happens after you die. The State and Federal governments both get a cut of whatever estate remains (the "Death Tax")--and it is a huge cut at that. Then, those who inherit the remainder of the estate usually have to pay taxes on that inheritance!

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!!!

At some level, I think politicians secretly hope that no one will figure out that the taxes paid by the average American in a single year is staggering. Since they bear the tax burden of this country, I'd love to know how much the average middle-income American pays out in taxes (in whatever form) over the course of a year. I bet it would be in the area of around 50-60% of their income.

One of the catalysts for the colonies breaking away was Taxation Without Representation. In a way, our elected officials are doing the same to all of us by taxing literally everything we do. They hold quiet legislative meetings for 'public input,' then when few people actually show to speak out about the taxes, they pass the proposals on from one sub-committee to the next until it becomes law, and yet another unwanted tax is added to our daily financial burden.

I encourage all of you to write your political leaders and demand answers (as is our Constitutional right) as to the why's of the current US tax code, and ask, "When will it end?" Then, if they balk or refuse to answer, use the power of your right to vote, and elect a new person in his/her stead.

Nothing will ever be done if no voice ever rises above the madness of our tax system, and we call upon our leaders to stop burdening us with taxes that only further shackle the very financial legs that this country stands on. Remember, the future of our country is literally in the hands of its people. So what will you choose to do?

Who Will Send Aid to America's Hungry?

One of the reasons I started this blog was to create discussion about vital (and not-so-vital) issues facing us today. I strongly feel that being silent only increases the likelihood that nothing will ever change. With that thought, I have a subject that has bothered me for years...who is going to send aid to America's hungry people?

Every legislative year, Congress passes multiple foreign aid packages that are intended to help varying countries feed the hungry, educate the people, create jobs, and help to stimulate economies. That's ok. I'm glad that we have the money to be able to help emerging nations get closer to self-sufficiency.

However, while we annually spend tens of billions on these foreign aid packages, Congress typically cuts back on domestic aid and services. In other words, while we feed the world, many of our own citizens go hungry day after day, or don't have adequate shelter or clothing, or quality education for their kids.

Whether the public, our States, our Congress, or even our President want to admit it, this country has what has been described as a 'rampant hunger problem.' We have the poor and lower middle class income familes who can't adequately feed themselves. They are called the working poor.

The numbers of our own citizens going hungry or who are malnourished are not known. One estimate I read puts it in the tens of millions. These folks are not just living on the street. They can be (and probably are) your neighbors, friends, work associates, church acquaintances, etc.

Our elected leaders should be ashamed that 'the world's bread basket' cannot feed its own who are struggling. Their eyes are constantly searching for ways to help other countries, but are blind to their own struggling citizenery. This very opinion is fleshed out in constant cutbacks in programs for those needing help such as vocational training, social services, food assistance, etc, etc, etc. All the while, we send more and more aid to other countries.

I guess my question is, "Why are we aiding everyone else in the world, but are ignoring the hunger problem at home?"

What makes it ok to tell hard-working Americans that they aren't important enough to ensure every person in every house has good, nourishing, and abundant food to eat? I have personally been through some rough times. I have gone hungry so my kids could eat. I know how terrible it is to hear your child ask if there is any more food. I don't ever want to be in that position again.

We are the wealthiest nation on earth. Our farms feed the world. Yet our leaders praise themselves for all the good they do; Our corporations pat themselves on the back for all the public service they provide; Our current presidential candidates spout empty promises about bettering the lives of all Americans; Political contributors pay $20,000.00 a plate for dinners with their favorite politicians, dressing up in their finest, and making nice in order to curry future political favor.

Meanwhile, food prices are out of control, energy prices are soaring to unimaginable heights, services for those in need are constantly cut back, and Washington DC turns a blind eye as they continue searching for that next big aid package that will assist yet another country.

What's wrong with this picture?

I know that there are no quick fixes, and that this issue alone is infinitely complex. But ignoring it only makes the problem exponentially worse. We must feed our friends, neighbors, etc. Our leaders must [actually] look no further than their own constituencies to know where to send that next big aid package.
If they do not, who else in the world will send food aid to America's hungry?

In the Olympic Spirit

For this post I thought that I'd take a break from the usual, and instead focus on the incredible spectacle going on in China. The Olympics have always been about human achievement, and the sheer will to overcome all odds in rising to the pinnacle of one's abilities. The 29th Olympiad is no exception to this millenia old endeavor.

As I have watched not just our athletes, but also those from around the world, I cannot be anything but impressed with the dedication, drive, determination, and fierce strength of will to rise to the top and be called the world's best. These men and women are truly amazing in every way, and are an inspiration to billions around the world.

Whether they take home a medal or not, these athletes have overcome tremendous odds just to be on that stage. Some are their countries lone representatives, and their nations swell with pride at seeing their athlete compete at such a grand event.

Win or lose, every competitor at this, or any other Olympiad will take with them the memories, pride, friendships, and simple joy at the incredible experience they went through. They should always be our heroes, and we should always seek to emulate the examples that they have put forth in their quest to be the best in the world.

I hope that everyone in the US, and the world, stops to watch this phenomenal display of athleticism now happening in Beijing; and that they appreciate and applaud the outstanding men and women competing on this grandest of world stages.

Possibly THE WORST Drivers In This Country

On my last post I alluded to the fact that I would write an upcoming post on whom I believe to possibly be the worst drivers in the country; and they reside right here in Utah.

Why do I say that? Well, besides living here for the last 6 1/2 years, I was a first hand witness to my own kids going through the process of learning to drive; and let me tell you--it wasn't pretty.

Like I alluded to in my post regarding the State Legislature, the insurance rates (auto) are among the highest in the nation. This is due to the extraordinary number of at-fault accidents in this state. By at-fault, I mean accidents that could, and should, have been avoided simply through following the rules of the road in regards to yourself, and the drivers around you.

Now, I could go on and on in illustrating why the drivers here are so awful, so I'll try to constrain myself to a few real-life stories about accidents on Utah's roads.

1) Just last week, a 23 year old woman was killed in a roll-over accident which was caused by a semi driver going too fast, as well as cutting her off when he (the truck driver) made a sudden, non-signalled lane change, thereby causing the woman (who was driving a small car) to hit the trucks tires, lose control, roll across the median and onto the other side of the freeway, and was there hit by another driver.

2) A few winters ago a woman and her daughter were killed when they were driving in the commuter lane on I-15. They were legally obeying the speed limit when a man in a pick-up truck (who was alone in the vehicle) came up behind them in the commuter lane as well. Police estimate he was traveling at least 85 mph in a 65 zone). Right when he came within inches of this womans bumper (trying to intimidate her into moving out of the commuter lane), her car hit a patch of black ice. She swerved, the truck smashed into the back of her car sending it headlong into a guardrail then onto the median.
The pick-up sped right by and never stopped to assist (luckily someone got the plate #). The mother was killed instantly, the daughter survived. But as she was making her way to the side of the freeway to get help, another car hit the same black ice, and swerved right into the girl, killing her.

3) About a year ago I was driving with my daughter along I-15 when we came up to a line of cars approaching an exit. It was a holiday weekend, so there were lots of cars waiting to exit. I was in the middle of three lanes, and a solid line of cars to my right. As I approached the point of the freeway exit, a driver (in a camper and pulling a boat) was busy doing whatever because he didn't see the car in front of him stop. Well, instead of turning out to the side of the road, he turned into my lane.

I was going 65 mph.

I saw his thoughtless maneauver and instantly did all I could to avoid hitting him. I ended up swerving (on dry pavement, luckily) across two lanes, going back and forth several times before regaining control of my car (you could see my skid marks for a few weeks!). My daughter was in tears, and I was grateful to be alive.

In all three of these instances, there was a common factor that contributed to each. Can you name it?

Ok, here it is...They were ALL preventable.

It's a fact that 98% of all physical trauma (accidents, in whatever form) is the result of 1 or more bad choices by 1 or more people. That's huge! Think about it. Statistically, out of all the trauma out there, 98 times out of 100 it could have been prevented. That's a sobering thought.

So, what makes Utah drivers so bad? There are several factors. They start with the State Legislature. They refuse to raise taxes, therefore there is less money for educational programs. The fewer taxes are received in a particular area, the less state tax allocation the school receives (or something like that). Where my kids went to High School, they got very little funding from the state. One glaring point of this is Drivers Education.

Both my kids got exactly two weeks (that's right, two whole weeks) of classroom instruction, with each class taking approximately 1 hr 15 minutes. They never opened their drivers ed manual, and the instructor barely taught anything (this, according to my kids). Then, their "range time" consisted of three sessions in a car with an instructor, each of which lasted approximately 20 minutes. That's 1 hour folks.

According to State law, the kids are supposed to have 40 hours of supervised driving time with a parent. I can say with 99.9% assurety that this never happens. Even as adamant as we were, my kids only got about 30 hours in.

After that, a 16 year old can get a license. Is anyone out there frightened? You should be; because generation after generation of drivers in this state are not properly educated on the rules of the road. Forget advanced rules, I'm talking basic, common-sense things like signalling when you are going to make a turn; What signs mean; Obeying the Speed Limit; What is your responsibility in merging onto the freeway, etc, etc, etc.

This is downright scary stuff folks! And the state turns a blind to the perpetual problem it has created. Further, they do nothing to prevent more accidents by (once again) refusing to raise tax money to hire more troopers to patrol our freeways. Which brings me to another point...State Troopers who also break the laws of the road. How often in most states will you see a trooper holding up a line of cars on a freeway because no one dares to pass them? In most states you'd never dream of passing a police vehicle for fear of being the recipient of a moving violation.

In my time in Utah, I regularly see on-duty (and off-duty) officers exceeding the speed limit as a regular matter of driving. Why should anyone go the posted speed limit when even the police don't obey that one? Drivers here speed with seeming impugnity because they know that the odds of them actually being pulled over are slim to none.

Get this one--In Salt Lake County I can actually get a ticket for driving the posted speed limit! Absolutely true. That county has an ordinance that states a car holding up the flow of traffic can receive a moving violation. This very thing happened a few years ago. The traffic flow was moving at around 75 mph (in a 65 zone), and a driver, legally obeying the federally posted Speed Limit, was pulled over and cited for impeding traffic. Can you believe that?! He got a ticket for obeying the law!!!

The city police really aren't any better. In my daily 10-minute commute to work I see traffic light violations, non-signalled turns, extremely close-up tailgating, driving through stop signs as if they weren't even there, etc, etc. When driving in a large parking lot (like at a Mall), drivers regularly zoom across the whole lot in order to get around the mall roads. They don't pay attention to anyone or anything as they go 35-45 mph or faster. I honestly don't know how many times I've been close to being involved to a T-bone accident while safely and legally driving in parking lots.

When you drive on Utah's roads, you have to be prepared to have a major catastrophe at any time. The drivers here are truly that dangerous. And no one at the local or state level seems to care one iota. I have written my elected officials, and no one has responded.

I could literally go on for paragraph after paragraph about things that drivers do on the roads in this state; and it would all be 100% true. The drivers in Utah (as a whole) are absolutely horrendous, and downright dangerous. Something needs--no, something MUST be done. How many more people will needlessly die for anyone in the state or local governments to take notice and start the change?

There are clearly no easy answers to this one, folks; but when even the men and women who are supposed to protect our roads are themselves breaking the basic driving laws, then we as a population should be very afraid for our lives every time we sit behind the steering wheel. And truthfully, I am. Every day.

(For those of you who might be wondering, I have been driving for 30 years. In all that time, I have gotten exactly ZERO moving violations, and have been involved in one accident-- which wasn't my fault...I was rear ended by a drunk driver at a stop sign.)

Effective Goverment In Action...?

Alright...I'm going to give up a little personal info here. But first, a question: What would you call a State Legislature that works approximately 15 weeks per year, is unpaid, and wastes most of its first 13 weeks endlessly debating bills, taxes, budgets, etc, then crams into two weeks what should have been done over the previous 13?

In Utah, its called Effective Government In Action--or, I should say, inaction. That's right. I've lived in Utah (unfortunately) for 6 1/2 long years. Enough time to know that the State Legislature is a joke of a "Legislative Body." The endless debates do indeed suddenly cease somewhere in the 13th week, then every Representative and Senator puts as many riders on as many bills as they can, and finally reach the end of their yearly session; each heading back to their regular jobs, knowing that they did their best.

Do you see what's wrong with this picture? If not, let me give you a little more info. Most of each years' session is filled in budgetary discussion. New laws are passed that have no real effect on everyday lives in Utah, while REAL issues are never addressed.

For instance, the Legislature (I don't think) has any real oversight on the state contracts issued to road repair work. There is a stretch on I-15 which is filled with pot holes. Repair crews (plural) head out, patch it up, then return (literally) 3-4 months later to repair the same holes. This has gone on the whole 6 1/2 years I have lived here! The state will pay the contractor multiple times for a repair job that could (and should) be done once. Why don't they? Where is the oversight?

The drivers in this state are perhaps the worst I have ever been around. (I've got a whole other blog I'll be doing on this, but let me touch on this briefly). Why? There are multiple reasons, so let me just start here. The lifelong citizens of this state are so paranoid about raising taxes ("I don't want the governmint tellin ME what to do!") that the State doesn't have enough $$ too pay for the much needed law enforcement increases. I wrote my State Representative and Senator about this issue, as well as the Governor. I got NOTHING of a response from any of them. They don't seem to care. A sad statement.

It's a fact that Utah has one of the highest per capita auto insurance rates in the country. Why? Because there are so many at-fault accidents. Now, I know that increased law enforcement wouldn't necessarily decrease the at-fault accidents significantly, but increased presence would indeed help to lower the number.

Then finally, here's the real doozie. The Legislature, in its infinite and misguided wisdom, in order to meet the budget, has decided that all State offices will have a 4-day work-work. Further, there is discussion that this will include the public schools! Instead of raising taxes to benefit education, the Legislature might essentially tell every parent that their children's future isn't important enough.

Additionally, the very concept creates other issues such as daycare for working parents who will suddenly have to either stay home (and miss out on income), or pay extra monies for another day of childcare. What non-core subjects will be lost because there is no longer enough time to teach everything (arts, music, etc)? Or how about the product vendors for all the school districts? How many workers would they have to lay-off in order to meet their budgets? How many taxes will be lost because the schools are closed one extra day?

How will one of the poorest funded educational systems in this country fare when an additional day of instruction is lost because the Legislature is afraid to raise taxes?

The Utah State Legislature is a joke. It won't do what it MUST in order to meet the basic needs of its citizens because it's too afraid that a pro-tax strategy will lose their next elections. When will they wake up an realize that the constituancy of this state deserve better than the "best" they (the Legislature) have done?
Taxes can indeed go too far; but when the basics of education and infrastructure are marginalized, then we have a prime example of government 'inaction.'

More on "Dubya's At It Again"

Following up on my first post "Dubya's At It Again," this was released just today regarding drilling for oil off the nations coasts:
...According to the federal government's own Department of Energy, drilling off America's coasts would not have a significant impact on domestic oil production or prices before 2030. And off-shore leasing wouldn't even begin before 2012...
...Most of the U.S. offshore oil, almost 10 billion barrels, lie off the coast of California. But at the current rate of U.S. consumption - about 20.7 million barrels a day - that would be burned up in 16 months...
(and I love this one!)

...Experts believe that currently restricted areas … could eventually produce up to 18 billion barrels of oil," Mr. Bush said in a recent speech.

On that quote, my first question is,"Who paid for the 'Expert Opinions,' and why is the opinion not one of assurety? It is common practice in many industries to conduct research to determine what is correct, beneficial, etc, and what is bad, dangerous, unhealthy, etc.

In commisioning this research, the company wanting the information will hire a firm that will give them the results they (the 'fact finding' company) want. In other words, the results are skewed from the beginning. Mr. Bush seems to advocate this same 'fact finding' to support his call for oil drilling. Notice the words "...could eventually..." Anyone who has followed politics can recognize this jargon as basically saying, "...well, the oil might be down there, and if it is, it will take a long, long time to get it out."

Mr. Prez is still adding on to the Texas-sized pile of horse poo that is already sickeningly deep. I still maintain that his one interest is for $$$. The same articles I read on this alluded to the fact that if the oil actually hits the market in the next 22 years or so, its impact might well be as much as an entire two-bits--yep, a whole quarter. Whoopy-Dooo!!!!

Let's all jump up right now and gleefully yell our praises to the big Oilman from Texas. Billions in assured tax breaks, exemptions from established Environmental safeguards, and a profit windfall fall for every hire-up associated with the exploration, drilling, refining, and selling of the petroleum products.

The environment will get screwed; the American Taxpayer will get shafted; and the American consumers will feel the brunt of the "lower" gas prices when they spend $100 on gas to fill their car, instead of $100 on groceries to fill their stomachs. Isn't it about time the government put some real money into energy research instead of shoveling it towards companies (in the form of tax breaks) that already could care less whether or not you can feed your family?

The Obesity Scapegoats

Over the last twenty years, the average American waistline has expanded to widths not previously known. Both men and women, young and old alike, are getting bigger, rounder. Recently, the US Dept. of Health stated (and I'm paraphrasing here) that we are in the midst of an obesity epidemic, the likes of which this country has never seen.

As has gotten popular over the same twenty years, the average American is looking for a scapegoat to blame for their gluttony, or at the very least, their poor dietary choices. Lawyers have been entrenched here or there, going after this or that industry. People are actually suing restaurants like McDonalds for making them fat.

The basic problem here is what I have already alluded to...people looking for a scapegoat. Rather than facing the REAL issue, consumers are turning to a less painful path--that of blame. It's so easy to blame this or that. It's convenient to label people into easily identifiable demographic groups so as to squarely place blame here or there.

My problem with all of this is (or should be, at least) highly apparent: Where is the PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY in this entire argument? No one made the Average American eat an endless list of foods at a particular restaurant. No one told them to chow down thousands of grams of saturated fat every day. These people ACTUALLY CHOSE to take in the foods they ate. Their very own personal choices led to their historic weight gains.

Sure the advertising of various foods blitzes everyone day after day. The smells can be almost intoxicating. But the real issue here is still personal choice. Yet, the government, lawyers, and [a large] number of individuals are trying (and succeeding) to blame the fast food industry for the extraordinary weight problem besetting this country.

(A little soap boxing here) I've got news for everyone who falls in this category...YOU MADE THE CHOICES THAT LED TO YOUR WEIGHT! NO ONE ELSE ATE THAT FOOD FOR YOU! NO ONE DEMANDED YOU INGEST ALL THAT FAT, AND ALL THOSE CALORIES! YOU CHOSE TO PUT THESE THINGS IN YOUR BODY, SO STOP BLAMING OTHERS FOR YOUR CHOICES!!!

Do you see my point? People are simply looking for excuses to justify the choices they made which led to the weight gain and subsequent health related issues. Personal accountability is completely lost. When we teach children as they grow, they learn the natural consequences of poor decisions. As adults, those same children are learning that they don't have to be held responsible for choosing things which are a detriment to themselves.

It's far easier to place blame and go after a monetary award than it is to take a good look at yourself and admit that you haven't made the best choices when it comes to food. Personally, I think its a very sad statement about us as individuals, that we are allowing others to pay (both literally and figuratively) for the choices we have been making all along; for allowing others to pay for our mistakes and poor judgement.
